The time of year has arrived for migratory Gray Whales to begin their long journey north. Every Spring all along Oregon’s shores, Gray Whales can be seen fluking and breaching during their travels toward the colder waters of Canada and Alaska. There are a ton of locations along the coast and HWY 101 to spot whales, including the beautiful vantage point in this photo near Depoe Bay and our absolute favorite spot at Neahkahnie Overlook near Manzanita. If you have a pair of binoculars handy, spotting a Gray Whale during migration is almost guaranteed!

In honor of International Women’s Day, we wanted to highlight an awesome group of women from Columbia River Gorge history! In 1956, a group of ambitious and determined women, collectively known as the Portland Women’s Forum, purchased 3.7 acres of land in the Columbia River Gorge with the intention to preserve its natural beauty for future generations of Oregonians. In 1963, the land was turned over to the State of Oregon and to this day remains a treasured stop for locals and visitors in search of fresh air and a spectacular view, seen in this photo.

Happy Friday!! The Portland Winter Lights (Non)Festival is returning this year with installations spread throughout the entire city to promote social distancing. It begins tonight and lasts through this weekend and next. If you’re in Portland and looking for something fun, this could be a great addition to your weekend plans. As of the start of the year, a number of the hardest hit trails have reopened in the Columbia River Gorge after the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire.
.
There have been huge crowds traveling to hike the newly reopened trails, so if you must go, don’t forget to leave early and to comply with social distancing guidelines to keep yourself and everybody else safe while out on the trail.
.
This photo was taken on the Eagle Creek Trail prior to the fires, but we are so excited to get back out there after the large crowds have tapered to see how the area is healing and regrowing three years later.

‘Tis the season for snow at the mountain! We are so lucky in Portland to have Mt. Hood just a short 1.5 hour drive from the city and filled with a winter wonderland of recreation! Whether you ski or snowboard, cross-country ski, snowshoe, innertube, build snowpeople, or just like to cozy up by a warm fireplace in a historic lodge, Mt. Hood has it all. ❄️
